Q: What did you have to study or learn to get into this field?

A: I did a Bachelor of Business Degree, Major in Marketing

Q: What led you to choose this path?

A: I started in the IT industry, specialising in Retail and Supply Chain, then semi retired ten years ago and started Astroglide eleven years ago.

Q: Why do you believe your work is important?

A:  I love dealing with customers and exceeding expectations.    This industry is similar to others, its important to focus on customer service and that will drive sales and growth.   We have grown every year for all the eleven years. It is also important to get a good work life balance, the great aspect of this business if that the business can be run from anywhere, with a laptop and internet connection!!   I send out orders 7 days a week, including public holidays, so this is part of the customer excellence strategy.

Q: Who are (or were) some of your biggest influences?

A:  My Father who was a Commando and Platoon Leader in the Korean War and in the Malayan Emergency.  He was super organised and I learnt a lot.

Q: What, if anything, has surprised you most, working the field you’re in?

A: Nothing surprises me.   I think the industry lacks serious merchandising that you would see in fashion stores.  Stores need to adapt their layouts and create interest for customers. The stores that do this, are always the ones that go well.   I am also surprised that the vast difference in quality of personal lubricants, ingredients used and the efficiency of the different personal lubricants. Astroglide prides itself on price performance.

Q: What have you learned from this experience, how has it changed you?

A: I offer advice to store owners and managers, when I can, so they don’t just see you as a supplier, but also a business partner.   We also put back into the Community, by attending various disability events and providing product for the sector.

Q: What is your favourite piece of advice for people?

A:  The Customer is King or Queen.  Work hard and enjoy life. Take considered risks as most of the time you will succeed.  Also life is too short not to use a quality lubricant!!
