What can I do about Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction or impotence is basically the inability to get and/or keep an erection firm enough for sex.

Having erection trouble from time to time isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. It is a pretty normal part of life. But if ED is an ongoing issue; it can cause stress, affect your self-confidence and contribute to relationship problems. Problems getting or keeping an erection also can be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs treatment or perhaps a risk factor for heart disease down the road. It can be that canary in the coal mine for serious future health concerns. If you’re concerned about erectile dysfunction, talk to your doctor, even if you’re embarrassed. You, your relationships & health are worth it.

Male sexual arousal is more complex than we sometimes give it credit. It involves the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels. And wow, if just one of these issues crops up, yes erectile dysfunction can play a factor. Also, stress and mental health concerns can cause or compound erectile dysfunction. It’s kind of a wonder it doesn’t happen more often!

There are some physical as well as emotional reasons for erectile dysfunction, including:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Some prescription medications
  • Tobacco
  • Sleep disorders

Our brains play a key role in triggering the series of physical events that cause an erection, starting with sexual excitement. So if our brain isn’t feeling it…those sexy feelings or lack of arousal will just not communicate with your penis. Even if your brain is feeling aroused, depression, anxiety, stress can all interfere with the erection process.

As we all know, sometimes those visits to the doctor can be too brief.  Remember to be prepared. Communication is critical.  Have your questions ready before you go. Write down any symptoms you’ve had, including any that might seem unrelated to erectile dysfunction. These might include stress related issues, especially major life changes. Have a list of all the medications you take, including vitamins and herbal supplements. Talk with your partner, or even bring them along.   The doctor is there for you.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Any question you have is valid; remember, this is an important part of your health and lifestyle.   When you visit your doctor, you’ll learn about medication, self-injection, implants etc…all ways to help you rediscover your sex life.

But there are also some simple alternatives that might work for you.

If you can get an erection but simply have trouble maintaining one consider a penis ring. Try starting with a larger ring first. If this does not hold your erection then try the next smaller size. You can put ring on semi-erect and use a little lube to make it more comfortable for you. The ring should fit snug but still be comfortable to wear. You wear it at the base of your penis against your body.

The ring is slowing your blood flow to keep you hard longer but you will still have your sensitivity. Remove the ring if you experience any discomfort and for sure remove after 20 minutes of use. Rings have the added benefit of keeping your erections more firm and you lasting longer, so even if ED is not your issue…anyone can benefit from using a penis ring from time to time.

If you can’t really achieve an erection right now, consider using a pump or vacuum erection system. Pumps can sometime claim amazing achievements like larger penis size but in fact what they are really excellent for is getting you erect. Place a stretchy ring at the open end of the pump. Place the pump over your penis, use lubricant to create a seal between you and the pump. Then simply pump; you should achieve an erection fairly quickly.. Now the tricky part; while still erect inside the pump, roll the ring on your penis, releasing the pressure in the pump.

You should now have an erect and hard penis. Sometimes this takes a bit of practice and it may not work the very first time but likely with a little practice you will have success. Before your next sexual encounter, practice a little by yourself but don’t forget to discuss how you feel with your partner. You will both feel better getting the elephant in the room out in the open.
