How do I choose the best lubricant for me
Lubricant has come a long way from the lubricant that was used at your doctor’s office. There is so much choice and selection now, and it can be a bit overwhelming. The key factor to remember lubricant is here to enhance your sex life.
Types of Lubricants
Water Based Lubricant
Water based lubricant is your most common type of lubricant. It comes in a variety of consistencies, from quite thick to watery thin. The thicker lubricant is generally used for anal play or when you just want staying power. Thinner lubricant mimics your natural lubrication and is used when you simply want a little more. If you have any sensitivities, look for lubricant that is paraben and glycerin free. Paraben is a preservative used in many cosmetic products. Glycerin is a natural humectant but if you are prone to yeast infections, glycerin can aggravate them.
Lubes are generally scent free and designed for internal use. Water based lubricant is ideal if you plan to use with toys as it is compatible with all toy materials. It tends to dry up quickly so a helpful hint, have a glass of water by your nightstand and splash a bit of water on your lubricant and it will help to revitalize it. They tend to be the least expensive of all lubricants but you will use more.
Silicone Based Lubricant
Silicone is hypoallergenic and is ideal for couples. It generally has a very simple ingredient list and is a moisturizer. Silicone is used in hair products and body skin care products. It is the longest lasting lubricant you will find. A little goes a long way but it is more expensive. Most would say the extra dollars are worth it for the experience.
If you use silicone lubricant remember you cannot use it with silicone toys. There are many variations of silicone and if silicone is used on a silicone toy, over time, it will break it down.
A hybrid lubricant is a combination of water and silicone. It has just a touch of silicone to help make it last longer. You can use it with silicone toys. It is the best of both worlds.
This is generally used by couples for extra enhancement. It can be quite hot, so if you have any allergies or sensitivity avoid using a warming lube. It is just not worth it. Try using it on the inside of your wrist and wait to see if you have a reaction. If you do, rinse quickly with cold water.
This is generally used by couples for oral enhancement. It can be used with condoms for safer oral sex. It can also be placed directly on the skin. They are generally sugar free. Look for a natural ingredient list or organic lubricants for the most natural taste.
